Description

This marvelous watch brooch was created by the Carl F. Bucherer company of Switzerland, which was founded in 1888. They are one of the oldest luxury watchmakers and are still operating today with the 3rd generation of family members. The watch brooch is comprised of silver metal, red carnelian, marcasites and glass. It is rare, very early and possibly a one-of-a-kind design in the shape of an ornate lantern light which hangs from a lovely bow-shaped pin. Sparkly marcasite stones cover the bow, the connecter chain and the lantern and large round red carnelian stones run down both sides representing the lantern flame from inside. The front of the lantern opens to reveal the back of the watch case and the back of the lantern has an ornate cutout allowing light in to enhance the red carnelian stones. The watch is a Swiss made, wind up, analog with 17 jewels. The dial of the watch is white with blue hands and it has numbers that are rendered in Arabic. The crown is present, winds properly and pulls out to set the time. The watch is running and kept time well when tested against my modern Citizen eco drive watch. The face of the watch hangs updside down so it can be lifted and read when worn. It's an absolutely stunning vintage timepiece! The watch and brooch together measure about 2 1/4 inches long and 1 1/4 inches wide. The brooch is signed and hallmarked "CB" for Carl Bucherer and "Metall" (the German word for metal) on the back of the watch case and also "Metall" on the back of the pin of the brooch top. The inside back and inside of the front door of the lantern are stamped with a number "12", which may be a design number. The watch dial is signed "Bucherer" at the top. The watch movement is also marked "Swiss" and "Seventeen 17 Jewels". The carnelian stones tested as genuine stone on a Presidium gem tester. The piece weighs 22.8 grams. This is such a fine vintage timepiece! It's beautiful, highly collectible and would make a marvelous addition to a vintage watch collection. The watch brooch is in excellent vintage condition with expected patina to the metal and normal surface scratches from previous wear. When viewed with high power magnification, I could see no missing stones, the only issue being one broken marcasite on the right side of the bow, second level down, three in from the right (photo #10). I could not see this with the naked eye and it doesn't detract from this delightful piece. It could be easily replaced if desired. It's a superb find! SIGNED: WATCH-BUCHERER ON WATCH DIAL, CB AND METALL ON THE BACK OF THE WATCH CASE, SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS & SWISS ON THE WATCH MOVEMENT AND LANTERN BROOCH-12 ON THE BACK INSIDE AND INSIDE OF DOOR ON LANTERN AND METALL ON THE PIN OF THE BROOCH.SIZE: 2 1/4 INCHES LONG AND 1 1/4 INCHES WIDE (WATCH & BROOCH COMBINED)WEIGHT: 22.8 GRAMSCONDITION: EXCELLENT, VINTAGE PRE-OWNED CONDITION. NORMAL SURFACE SCRATCHES FROM PREVIOUS USE/WEAR/STORAGE AND SOME AGE PATINA. ONE MARCASITE STONE IS BROKEN ON THE BOW (PHOTO #10) BUT IT'S NOT VISIBLE TO THE NAKED EYE AND COULD BE EASILY REPLACED IF DESIRED. THE WATCH RAN AND KEPT GOOD TIME WHEN TESTED. DUE TO ITS AGE, I CANNOT GUARANTEE IS WILL RUN WITHOUT ADDITIONAL CLEANING/SERVICING. SEE PHOTOS FOR ITEM SPECIFICS**IF YOU LIKE THIS LISTING, BE SURE TO VISIT MY SHOP!
